MEMPHIS, Tenn. (June 13, 2011) – While Americans seem to love almost every tradition that comes with summer, from family vacations to backyard barbecues and more, there’s one thing hardly anyone enjoys: paying the price for staying cool in the sweltering summer heat. That’s why American Home Shield is celebrating the first official day of summer, June 21, by asking homeowners and green supporters to raise their home thermostats three degrees on this day, for Three Degrees of Preparation, and start a new summer tradition of savings for the environment and their wallets.
“Three degrees can make a significant impact; some utility companies report that every degree below 78 can add more than six percent to your home’s cooling costs,” said American Home Shield President Dave Crawford. “We’re asking homeowners to give the adjustment a test on the first day of summer, June 21, and participate in Three Degrees of Preparation. Your family will probably not notice the difference in temperature, but make the adjustment a daily routine and you should notice it on your next energy bill.”
At the same time, participants will also help reduce energy usage across the nation for the day, thanks to an online registration site where the collective impact will be calculated: http://ThreeDegreesofPreparation.com .
Visitors to the site can enter to win a $15,000 grand prize, being given away by American Home Shield through its Live Green Save Green campaign, a social community/initiative to help homeowners adopt more energy efficient practices and reduce their environmental footprint. Five $100 gift cards are also being given away each week as part of the campaign. One entry per day, per person, through September 2, 2011.
